Amar’e Stoudemire has already reached basketball’s highest honor. Now the six-time NBA All-Star is starting again at the bottom of an entirely different profession — as a police officer.

The 43-year-old Basketball Hall of Famer graduated from Miami Dade College’s School of Justice Basic Law Enforcement Academy on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, after approximately 10½ months of training. He will now move into in-house training with the Miami-Dade Schools Police Department before beginning regular duties.

For Stoudemire, the move was not a celebrity experiment conceived after retirement. He told Sports Illustrated that becoming a police officer had been a goal since elementary school. Law enforcement also runs through his family: he said an uncle was a captain, another relative served as a deputy, a cousin is a captain and his sister is attending the academy.

The academy placed the former 6-foot-10 NBA star through the same training as his classmates. Stoudemire described physical conditioning, formation drills, classroom instruction, first aid, defensive tactics, vehicle operations and hundreds of pages of law-enforcement policy. He said he deliberately avoided seeking special treatment because of his celebrity status.

His performance earned additional recognition. Miami Dade College presented Stoudemire with the Harry “Coach” Everett Award for his contributions to the academy program during training. His new assignment will put him in a school-policing environment, where he has said he hopes to connect with young people before they get into serious trouble.

The career change comes only two months after another milestone. Stoudemire was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in August 2026. Across 14 NBA seasons with the Phoenix Suns, New York Knicks, Dallas Mavericks and Miami Heat, he averaged 18.9 points and 7.8 rebounds, earned six All-Star selections and made five All-NBA teams.

His basketball earnings also make the decision unusual. Basketball-Reference lists Stoudemire as earning at least $167.7 million during his professional career, meaning financial necessity was hardly driving the move. Stoudemire instead described law enforcement as a form of public service and an opportunity to use his experience, visibility and communication skills in the community.

Stoudemire acknowledged that his wife initially worried about the danger associated with police work, but he emphasized training, policy knowledge and officer safety. His immediate challenge is now very different from anything he encountered in the NBA: translating the discipline and command presence of an elite athlete into responsible police work around students and families.

From Rookie of the Year to Hall of Famer and now police officer, Stoudemire’s second act is striking precisely because he did not need one. After a career that brought wealth and basketball immortality, he chose to become a trainee again — this time with a badge waiting at the end.

Amar’e Stoudemire has already reached basketball’s highest honor.
