A White House official confirmed Friday that Zacharia was \u201clet go\u201d after just five days in the job and a single appearance behind the briefing-room podium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump announced Zacharia\u2019s appointment on <strong>October 9<\/strong>, and she formally began work on Monday, October 12. Her first \u2014 and ultimately only \u2014 press briefing came the following day, when she spent roughly 14 minutes at the podium and took questions from only three reporters. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hours before her departure was confirmed, Trump publicly suggested she reconsider the role. Speaking to reporters outside the White House, the president said he had told Zacharia that she might be \u201cbetter off being happy\u201d and questioned whether she needed the intense scrutiny that accompanies the position. He said he believed the media had treated her unfairly. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/trump-says-zacharia-should-reconsider-white-house-spokeswoman-role-2026-10-16\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\">Reuters<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The abrupt exit followed several days of scrutiny surrounding both her debut briefing and her professional biography. Trump had introduced Zacharia as an attorney when announcing her appointment, but she acknowledged in a Fox News interview this week that she <strong>did not pass the bar examination and never retook it<\/strong> after graduating from Pepperdine University\u2019s law school in 2011. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Zacharia defended her previous use of the word \u201clawyer,\u201d saying she held a law degree and had worked on international legal matters after moving to China. She distinguished that description from being an \u201cattorney at law.\u201d In the United States, however, a law degree alone does not authorize someone to practice law; admission to a state bar is generally required. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her first briefing had already attracted attention before the credential controversy intensified. Zacharia read extensively from prepared remarks, took questions from Breitbart, Fox News and the Daily Mail and ended the session after approximately 14 minutes. She later said she had received very little preparation time and that the abbreviated format was intentional because Trump planned to speak with reporters afterward. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One substantial announcement did emerge from that appearance: Zacharia confirmed that the administration had asked U.S. Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle to resign. Guilfoyle subsequently left the diplomatic post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Zacharia had previously worked as a senior communications adviser for Trump Media &amp; Technology Group and briefly served as a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson earlier in 2026. She succeeded Karoline Leavitt, who left the press secretary role in August. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Axios described Zacharia\u2019s five-day stint as the <strong>shortest tenure by a White House press secretary in modern history<\/strong>. Comparisons have also been made with Anthony Scaramucci\u2019s famously brief 2017 stay in the Trump White House, although Scaramucci served as communications director \u2014 a different position.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The White House had not announced a permanent successor in the latest reporting reviewed by The Informant.
