Justin Herbert absorbed one of the most jarring hits of NFL Week 6 on Sunday when Kansas City Chiefs cornerback L’Jarius Sneed’s knee struck the Los Angeles Chargers quarterback in the helmet as Herbert went to the ground at Arrowhead Stadium.

The play came with 3:27 remaining in the first quarter of the October 18 game. Herbert scrambled to his right for six yards on third-and-three and began giving himself up near the Kansas City 22-yard line. As Sneed closed from the secondary, he appeared to attempt to hurdle or avoid Herbert but instead caught the quarterback directly in the head and neck area with his knee.

Officials immediately penalized Sneed for unnecessary roughness. The personal foul moved Los Angeles deeper into Kansas City territory, although the Chargers ultimately settled for a Cameron Dicker field goal rather than converting the drive into a touchdown.

Replays quickly spread across social media and triggered debate over whether the contact was avoidable. The footage is dramatic, but it does not establish intent. Several reports described Sneed as trying to avoid the sliding quarterback when the collision occurred.

Herbert remained in the game and completed it. He finished 22 of 37 for 204 passing yards with no touchdowns and one interception, while also rushing five times for 26 yards. No injury directly attributed to Sneed’s hit had been publicly announced by the Chargers in the immediate aftermath.

The afternoon only became more difficult for Los Angeles. Kansas City’s defense sacked Herbert four times and kept the Chargers out of the end zone for the entire game. Dicker’s two field goals accounted for all six Los Angeles points.

Kansas City running back Kenneth Walker III powered the Chiefs with 128 rushing yards and two touchdowns, while Patrick Mahomes completed 23 of 30 passes for 272 yards. The victory was Mahomes’ 100th regular-season win as an NFL starter.

The Chiefs won 22-6 and improved to 5-0, remaining undefeated despite having already had their bye week. Los Angeles dropped to 0-6, its worst start since the 2000 season.

There was additional controversy later in the game when Chiefs cornerback Christian Roland-Wallace was ejected after throwing a punch during a fourth-quarter altercation. Sneed, however, remained in the contest after his first-quarter personal foul.

Any additional discipline against Sneed would come through the NFL’s weekly review process. As of Monday, no official league fine or suspension tied to the Herbert play had been announced.
