PETERSBURG, FLORIDA — October 20, 2026. The Tampa Bay Rays are heading back to baseball’s biggest stage after defeating the Cleveland Guardians 7-3 on Monday night to win the American League Championship Series in six games. The victory delivered Tampa Bay its third AL pennant in franchise history and put the club four wins away from its first World Series championship.

The turning point came from Junior Caminero, whose powerful swing finally produced his first home run of the postseason. The All-Star third baseman, who hit 42 home runs during the regular season, sent a seventh-inning drive off the left-field foul pole to extend Tampa Bay’s advantage. His celebration included a chest-pounding gesture and a tribute to former Rays outfielder Randy Arozarena before he crossed home plate. <Cite refs={[“turn239679view0″,”turn239679view2”]}/>

YANDY DÍAZ DELIVERS WHEN THE RAYS NEED HIM MOST

Veteran hitter Yandy Díaz provided another decisive blow in the eighth inning. After Cleveland narrowed the deficit to two runs, Díaz launched a two-run homer that restored a four-run cushion and helped Tampa Bay close out the series. He had predicted a Game 6 victory the previous day, making the home run an emphatic follow-through on his promise.

The clubhouse celebration was equally memorable. Díaz brought out a large bone-in tomahawk steak, a tradition he had started during the Rays’ American League East title celebration. Teammates sprayed sparkling wine as players danced and celebrated the team’s return to the World Series. Caminero joined the festivities while enjoying bites of the celebratory steak.

A LOW-PAYROLL TEAM BUILT ON PITCHING AND FUNDAMENTALS

Tampa Bay’s success has come from a roster built around pitching, defense and disciplined offensive execution rather than overwhelming spending. The Rays won 98 regular-season games despite opening the year with a payroll of approximately $90.5 million, ranked 26th in the majors. Their ability to manufacture runs, take extra bases and capitalize on opponents’ mistakes has helped them advance through the postseason.

Manager Kevin Cash’s squad also benefited from a pitching staff that delivered in critical moments. Freddy Peralta, named ALCS Most Valuable Player, contributed across multiple appearances and helped limit Cleveland’s offense. Drew Rasmussen provided another key postseason performance, while closer Bryan Baker secured important late-inning outs. The team’s ability to combine starting-pitching strength with timely offense proved decisive in a competitive championship series.

RAYS AND BREWERS SET UP A WORLD SERIES WITH HISTORY AT STAKE

Tampa Bay will face the National League champion Milwaukee Brewers, who swept the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL Championship Series. The matchup guarantees a first-time World Series champion: neither franchise has won a title. Milwaukee last appeared in the World Series in 1982, while Tampa Bay’s previous trips came in 2008 and 2020, both ending in defeat.

The best-of-seven series begins Friday, October 23, at American Family Field in Milwaukee, with the first pitch scheduled for 8 p.m. Eastern. Games 1 and 2 will be played in Milwaukee before the series moves to Tampa Bay for Games 3 and 4, with a fifth game there if needed. The teams’ contrasting paths—Milwaukee’s sweep of the defending champion Dodgers and Tampa Bay’s six-game win over Cleveland—set up a compelling matchup between two clubs seeking the defining achievement in their histories.

For the Rays, the celebration in the clubhouse marks the end of one challenge and the beginning of another. Caminero and Díaz supplied the decisive power in Game 6, but the club will need its pitching, defense and timely hitting to carry over against Milwaukee. Four victories now stand between Tampa Bay and the first World Series title in franchise history.

ST.
