The 28-year-old Super Bowl champion is clinically stable and undergoing treatment, according to a joint statement from the Eagles and his agent, Nicole Lynn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The diagnosis has raised concerns across the NFL, particularly because Hurts was initially cleared to play against the Jacksonville Jaguars in London after doctors identified a superficial blood clot in his left calf. The NFL has defended the team’s medical handling of the case, while the players’ union has called for further scrutiny.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Superficial vein thrombosis occurs when a blood clot forms in a vein close to the skin. It can cause localized pain, redness, tenderness and swelling. Although generally less dangerous than a clot in a deep vein, it can sometimes extend into the deep venous system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Deep vein thrombosis, or DVT, develops in deeper veins, commonly in the legs. It carries a greater risk because a clot can break loose and travel through the bloodstream to the lungs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When a clot obstructs an artery in the lungs, the condition is known as pulmonary embolism. Bilateral pulmonary emboli indicate that clots are present in both lungs. Pulmonary embolism can be life-threatening and requires prompt medical evaluation and treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

WHY BLOOD THINNERS WILL KEEP HURTS OFF THE FIELD<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Hurts’ treatment involves anticoagulants, commonly called blood thinners. These medications help prevent existing clots from growing and reduce the formation of new clots while the body gradually breaks down clot material.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Medical specialists generally recommend at least three months of anticoagulation for many cases of DVT and pulmonary embolism, although treatment duration depends on the patient’s circumstances and clinical assessment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because anticoagulants increase the risk of bleeding, participating in contact sports such as football is generally unsafe during treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
