Franklin Templeton has registered two exchange-traded funds that combine traditional U.S. stocks with an investment strategy that uses corporate dividends to accumulate Bitcoin-related assets. The move brings the asset manager closer to introducing an investment product designed to bridge conventional stock portfolios and digital assets.

The company submitted a Form 8-A to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on October 22, registering the Franklin US Equity Bitcoin DRIP Index ETF and Franklin US Innovation Bitcoin DRIP Index ETF for Nasdaq listing. The funds are expected to use the ticker symbols FBEQ and FIBT, respectively. Although an accompanying prospectus reportedly identifies October 27 as its effective date, the regulatory documents reviewed do not establish when public trading will begin.

HOW FRANKLIN TEMPLETON’S BITCOIN DIVIDEND STRATEGY WORKS

Both ETFs are designed to begin with approximately 95% of their portfolios invested in U.S. equities and 5% allocated to Bitcoin-related investments. Instead of using corporate dividends to purchase additional shares of the companies distributing them, the underlying indexes direct those payments toward additional Bitcoin exposure. This approach allows the cryptocurrency component to change over time as companies generate dividends and asset prices fluctuate.

The strategy does not require shareholders to maintain cryptocurrency wallets or receive Bitcoin directly. Investors will own shares of the ETFs, whose value will reflect the performance of both their underlying equity holdings and Bitcoin-related instruments. The funds may obtain cryptocurrency exposure through exchange-traded products, futures, options and other eligible investments described in their prospectuses.

FBEQ AND FIBT WILL TRACK DIFFERENT U.S. STOCK INDEXES

The Franklin US Equity Bitcoin DRIP Index ETF, expected to trade under FBEQ, will track the VettaFi US Large-Cap 500 Bitcoin DRIP Index. Its equity component is designed to provide exposure to large U.S. companies selected from a broad universe of approximately 500 stocks, subject to eligibility and weighting requirements.

The Franklin US Innovation Bitcoin DRIP Index ETF, expected to trade under FIBT, will follow the VettaFi US Innovation 100 Bitcoin DRIP Index. Its stock selection focuses on major innovation-oriented businesses drawn from the Nasdaq-listed company universe. Although the two products emphasize different types of equities, both apply the same general framework for reinvesting stock dividends into Bitcoin exposure.

BITCOIN ALLOCATION RULES AIM TO LIMIT PORTFOLIO CONCENTRATION

Franklin Templeton has established rules intended to keep cryptocurrency exposure from becoming an unrestricted share of either fund. At scheduled quarterly rebalancing dates, an allocation above 5% will be reduced to 4.5%, with the difference redirected toward equities. If the Bitcoin component is at or below 5%, the quarterly rule does not require the same reduction.

A separate mechanism applies when Bitcoin exposure exceeds 20% between quarterly reviews. Under that provision, the allocation is scheduled to return to 4.5% at the close of the second business day following the threshold breach. The system is intended to manage concentration, but rapid market movements, liquidity conditions and transaction expenses can still affect investment outcomes.

FRANKLIN TEMPLETON EXPANDS ITS DIGITAL ASSET BUSINESS

The new registrations build on Franklin Templeton’s existing involvement in digital assets. The company already manages the Franklin Bitcoin ETF, which trades under the symbol EZBC and provides investors with Bitcoin exposure through a separate investment vehicle. Its broader strategy also includes tokenized financial products and blockchain-based investment infrastructure.

The dividend-reinvestment ETFs represent a different approach from a dedicated spot Bitcoin fund. Rather than concentrating their investment strategy primarily on cryptocurrency, they emphasize traditional equities while using dividends to increase a secondary Bitcoin allocation. The products are designed to provide investors with exposure to both markets through a single exchange-traded fund.

FEES, CRYPTO VOLATILITY AND INVESTMENT RISKS

The proposed funds’ fees are an important consideration. Public reporting on their latest documents contains conflicting figures, particularly for the Innovation ETF, and investors should consult the final effective prospectus for each product before relying on a specific expense ratio.

The strategy also introduces risks that are not present in conventional equity-only funds. Bitcoin can experience sharp price swings, and products providing cryptocurrency exposure may face additional transaction costs, valuation differences, liquidity risks and changes in regulation. The rebalancing rules may reduce excessive concentration but cannot prevent investors from experiencing losses.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT FOR THE BITCOIN DRIP ETFS?

The registration of the two funds is a significant step toward a possible market launch, but it should not be confused with confirmation that trading has already started. Investors still need a definitive listing announcement, finalized fund terms and publicly available trading information before comparing actual performance or liquidity.

For now, Franklin Templeton’s filings demonstrate how established asset managers are developing investment products that combine equities and digital assets. The next questions are when FBEQ and FIBT will begin trading, how their final fee structures compare and whether investors will embrace a strategy that gradually turns stock dividends into Bitcoin exposure.

NEW YORK — October 23, 2026.
