WASHINGTON, D.C. — October 23, 2026. Britt McHenry, a former ESPN reporter who recently joined President Donald Trump’s administration as a U.S. State Department press adviser, has resigned following a confrontation with basketball fans at a Washington Wizards game, according to reports from Page Six, TMZ and Front Office Sports.

The incident occurred Wednesday, October 21, at Capital One Arena during the Wizards’ season opener against the Milwaukee Bucks. Video obtained by TMZ shows McHenry throwing a drink toward spectators during a heated exchange before leaving her seating section amid boos from the crowd.

ALTERCATION ERUPTS DURING WASHINGTON WIZARDS GAME

According to footage published by TMZ, McHenry became involved in a confrontation with fans seated behind her while attending the game with a male companion.

Witnesses could be heard calling for her removal as an usher approached the area. Additional video showed someone behind McHenry throwing a beverage in her direction before she picked up a cup and threw it back toward the spectators.

McHenry was subsequently seen moving through the stands as fans booed, with some tossing rally towels in her direction.

She responded by waving and blowing kisses toward the crowd. Another recording showed her arguing with a security guard who appeared to be directing her toward an exit.

Sources close to McHenry disputed claims that she was forcibly removed, maintaining that she left voluntarily.

DISPUTE REPORTEDLY BEGAN OVER COMMENTS ABOUT WINNIE HARLOW

Sources familiar with McHenry’s account told TMZ and Page Six that the confrontation began when spectators made offensive comments about model Winnie Harlow, who is engaged to Milwaukee Bucks player Kyle Kuzma.

Kuzma previously played for the Washington Wizards, making his return to Washington part of the backdrop to the incident.

According to those sources, McHenry asked the spectators to stop making derogatory remarks about Harlow.

They alleged that the fans responded with misogynistic comments directed at McHenry and that someone threw a drink toward her before she retaliated.

The videos support that drinks were thrown during the confrontation, but the complete sequence of verbal exchanges and the accounts of everyone involved have not been independently established.

The Wizards defeated the Bucks 128-116.

MCHENRY RESIGNS FROM STATE DEPARTMENT POSITION

Following the incident, McHenry left her position as a press adviser at the U.S. Department of State.

Front Office Sports reported Friday that McHenry personally confirmed signing a resignation letter.

Page Six, citing sources familiar with the situation, reported that she had been pressured to resign after the confrontation became public.

A State Department spokesperson declined to discuss the circumstances of her departure, citing the department’s policy of not commenting on internal personnel matters.

The available reporting therefore confirms her resignation but does not establish an official public explanation from the department for why she was asked to leave.

REPORTED PROMOTION CAME HOURS BEFORE CONTROVERSY

McHenry, 40, joined the Trump administration in September 2026 after working in sports journalism and political commentary.

Her State Department responsibilities reportedly included media relations involving Europe and Africa.

According to Page Six, she had recently been promoted to lead external affairs and press operations for the team of Under Secretary Jacob Helberg.

The reported promotion occurred on the same day as the basketball game.

A source told the publication that McHenry had been promoted and removed from her position within approximately 24 hours.

The State Department has not publicly confirmed the details of that reported promotion.

FORMER ESPN REPORTER HAD PREVIOUS PUBLIC CONTROVERSY

Before entering government service, McHenry worked as a correspondent for ESPN, covering professional sports and appearing on several of the network’s programs.

She later worked as a commentator for Fox News and Fox Nation.

In 2015, ESPN suspended McHenry for one week after a video surfaced showing her making insulting remarks toward an employee at a towing facility.

McHenry subsequently apologized for her conduct, although she later argued that the recording had been selectively edited.

The earlier incident was separate from the confrontation at Capital One Arena.

VIRAL VIDEO RAISES QUESTIONS ABOUT DEPARTURE

The basketball confrontation quickly attracted attention because of McHenry’s recently acquired government position and her previous career as a sports broadcaster.

The recordings document a public altercation, while accounts from sources close to McHenry provide a different perspective on how the dispute began.

Neither the State Department nor arena officials have publicly detailed any disciplinary investigation or announced legal action arising from the incident.

No criminal charges connected to the confrontation were identified in the reporting reviewed.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

McHenry’s departure brings an abrupt end to her brief tenure at the State Department.

Although she has confirmed signing a resignation letter, she has not publicly provided a comprehensive account of the circumstances surrounding her departure.

The episode has drawn attention to the conduct of public officials outside their workplaces and the consequences that widely circulated recordings can have for government personnel.

For now, McHenry is no longer serving in her State Department role, while questions remain about the internal decision-making that preceded her resignation.
