HOUSTON, TEXAS — November 4, 2026. Taurian Fontenette, the legendary American streetball player known worldwide as “Air Up There” and “Mr. 720,” has died at the age of 43. His death was confirmed by his sister, Tracie Fontenette, on November 3, prompting tributes from basketball fans who remember his extraordinary athleticism and his historic 720-degree dunk during the AND1 Mixtape Tour.

A STREETBALL ICON WHO CHANGED DUNKING HISTORY

Fontenette became an international sensation in 2006 after completing a remarkable 720-degree dunk during an AND1 Mixtape Tour game in Houston.

The move involved two full rotations in midair before finishing with a powerful dunk.

Widely recognized as the first documented 720-degree dunk performed during an organized basketball game, the moment helped establish Fontenette as one of streetball’s most influential aerial performers.

The highlight appeared on ESPN’s SportsCenter and spread rapidly across the internet, earning him the nickname “Mr. 720.”

FROM A SMALL TEXAS TOWN TO INTERNATIONAL FAME

Born in Hitchcock, Texas, in 1983, Fontenette developed his basketball skills at Hitchcock High School, where he earned all-state recognition.

He later played college basketball at the University of Texas at El Paso, Richland Junior College and Paul Quinn College.

Before joining the AND1 Mixtape Tour, he worked as a security guard at a chemical plant.

His career changed in 2005 when he attended an AND1 tryout and impressed organizers with his explosive jumping ability and creative dunks.

He subsequently joined the tour and became one of its most recognizable performers.

THE MAN BEHIND “AIR UP THERE”

Fontenette stood approximately 6 feet 2 inches tall but developed a reputation for performing dunks that seemed almost impossible for a player of his height.

His nickname “Air Up There” reflected his extraordinary vertical leap and ability to execute complicated aerial maneuvers.

He was also known as “Birdman,” “Human Pogo Stick,” “Your Highness” and “Way Up There.”

His style combined athleticism, creativity and entertainment, qualities that helped the AND1 Mixtape Tour reach audiences far beyond traditional basketball.

FAMILY CONFIRMS HIS DEATH

Fontenette reportedly died on Monday night, November 2, 2026.

His sister, Tracie, publicly confirmed the loss the following day, describing the impact of his death on their family and community.

As of November 4, no official cause of death had been publicly announced.

The circumstances surrounding his passing have not been disclosed, and no additional medical details have been independently confirmed.

A LASTING LEGACY IN BASKETBALL CULTURE

Fontenette’s legendary dunk remains one of the most recognizable highlights of the streetball era.

His performances influenced a generation of dunkers, basketball entertainers and young athletes who grew up watching AND1 mixtapes and early online basketball videos.

Although he never became an NBA superstar, his contributions to streetball earned him a place in basketball history.

For fans around the world, Taurian Fontenette will always be remembered as the player who appeared to defy gravity with two complete rotations before reaching the rim.
