The statement conveyed the president\u2019s assessment of Hegseth\u2019s work. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">SUPPORT AFTER THE MIDTERMS<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The remarks followed the November 3 elections. In a separate account citing the Journal, <em>The Western Journal<\/em> reported that Trump also rejected the prospect of broad personnel changes and praised Hegseth. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That account linked the discussion of Hegseth\u2019s future to questions about the administration\u2019s handling of the Iran conflict and its political consequences. Trump acknowledged that Iran had played a role in Republicans\u2019 election losses while defending his decision to pursue the war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">AN EXISTING SHOW OF CONFIDENCE<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump had also praised Hegseth before Election Day. On August 31, the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em> reported that the president commended his leadership while declining to discuss a potential 2028 presidential bid in detail, saying it was too early. Those earlier comments concerned a separate question about Hegseth\u2019s political future. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wednesday\u2019s statement provides a current indication of presidential support.
