ECUADOR PRIEST DIES AFTER GIANT CRUCIFIX FALLS DURING LIVESTREAMED MASS

GUAYAQUIL, ECUADOR — October 19, 2026. A Catholic priest died after a large wooden crucifix fell from its mounting and struck him during a livestreamed Mass in Guayaquil, Ecuador, on Saturday, October 17. The victim, Father Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari, was celebrating a religious service at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church when the structure unexpectedly collapsed.

The tragedy has drawn widespread attention because, just minutes before the accident, the priest had delivered a reflection about the inevitability of death. Footage of the service shows the crucifix falling near the altar, followed by cries from parishioners who rushed to help.

WHAT HAPPENED DURING THE LIVESTREAMED MASS?

The accident occurred during an evening service at Nuestra Señora del Perpetuo Socorro Church in the center-south of Guayaquil. Sánchez Molinari was near the altar when the large crucifix fell forward, striking him on the head.

The ceremony was being broadcast on social media. As congregants realized what had happened, several called for emergency assistance. The priest died following the impact, although available reports differ on the precise time of his death.

PRIEST HAD SPOKEN ABOUT DEATH BEFORE THE ACCIDENT

During his homily, Sánchez Molinari reflected on the limited nature of human life and the importance of dedicating time to faith and meaningful relationships.

Local media reported that he told worshippers that everyone present would eventually die, before discussing how people choose to spend their time. The reflection occurred shortly before the accident, not necessarily at the moment the crucifix fell.

The timing of his remarks has drawn particular attention online, but there is no evidence connecting the sermon to the structural failure.

WHO WAS FATHER PATRICIO SÁNCHEZ MOLINARI?

Sánchez Molinari was a member of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, commonly known as the Redemptorists, and served as parish priest at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church.

Originally from Cuenca, Ecuador, he had previously served at San Lorenzo Parish in Vinces. He was known for his pastoral work and for regularly broadcasting religious services to parishioners unable to attend in person.

ARCHDIOCESE CONFIRMS DEATH AS QUESTIONS REMAIN

The Archdiocese of Guayaquil confirmed the priest’s death and expressed condolences to his relatives, fellow Redemptorists and the wider Catholic community.

As of October 19, the archdiocese was awaiting a technical assessment to determine why the crucifix fell. Reports suggesting that mounting bolts may have loosened have not been established as an official finding.

The circumstances surrounding the installation, maintenance and structural condition of the crucifix remain under examination.

CATHOLIC COMMUNITY HOLDS MEMORIAL SERVICE

Parishioners gathered for a memorial Mass at the same church on Sunday, October 18, to remember the priest and offer prayers for his family.

His remains were subsequently transported to Cuenca, where funeral arrangements were being made.

The investigation into the crucifix’s collapse remains the principal outstanding question as the Catholic community mourns a priest whose final service was witnessed both inside the church and online.
