CABO SAN LUCAS, MEXICO — October 22, 2026. An 18-year-old woman died after falling from an amusement ride during the traditional festivities in Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur, prompting a criminal investigation, the suspension of the attraction and a change in leadership at the municipality’s Civil Protection department.
The victim, identified by local media as Gabriela Rodríguez Tezoco, was seriously injured on the evening of October 20 while riding an attraction commonly called “El Péndulo.” Emergency responders transported her to a nearby hospital, where her death was subsequently confirmed.
WHAT HAPPENED AT THE CABO SAN LUCAS FAIR?
The accident occurred in the amusement ride section of the Fiestas Tradicionales de Cabo San Lucas, a local celebration held from October 16 through October 20.
According to preliminary reports, Gabriela fell from the pendulum-style attraction while it was operating.
Emergency personnel, including Civil Protection and Mexican Red Cross responders, provided assistance before transferring her to a nearby medical facility.
Despite receiving emergency treatment, she died from her injuries. Authorities have not publicly established the precise mechanical or operational circumstances that caused the fall.
VIDEO OF THE INCIDENT CIRCULATES ONLINE
Videos recorded at the fair have circulated on social media, drawing attention to the accident and the emergency response.
Some footage shows the attraction operating at night, while other recordings reportedly capture the moments surrounding the fall.
The recordings have prompted questions about passenger restraints, operating procedures and safety inspections. However, the videos alone do not establish the cause of the accident.
Investigators are examining physical evidence and the attraction’s operating conditions before determining whether any safety requirements were violated.
PROSECUTORS OPEN FORMAL INVESTIGATION
The Baja California Sur Attorney General’s Office, known as the PGJE, opened a formal investigation following Gabriela’s death.
Investigators secured the amusement ride and surrounding area, while forensic specialists and state investigative agents began collecting evidence.
Authorities said experts in engineering, architecture and safety would examine the installation to determine the probable cause of the fall and assess compliance with required operating protocols.
The investigation may establish whether criminal or civil liability applies, but no official finding of responsibility has been announced.
AMUSEMENT RIDE SHUT DOWN AS SAFETY CHECKS BEGIN
Following the incident, the Los Cabos municipal government ordered the immediate suspension of the attraction.
Officials also initiated a review of other amusement rides operating at the fair to examine safety conditions and relevant documentation.
Municipal authorities explained that the rides are operated by private service providers under permits, making the review of operating conditions and authorization records part of the broader investigation.
The municipality pledged to cooperate with state prosecutors and provide assistance to the victim’s family.
CIVIL PROTECTION DIRECTOR REPLACED AFTER ACCIDENT
On October 21, the Los Cabos municipal government announced that Francisco Cota Márquez would no longer lead the Directorate of Civil Protection and Risk Management.
Diego Camacho Hale was appointed acting director and assigned to coordinate the transfer of records and information requested by investigators.
The municipal government characterized the change as an administrative measure intended to ensure transparency and cooperation.
The decision does not establish that the former director committed wrongdoing or was responsible for the accident.
COMMUNITY MOURNS GABRIELA RODRÍGUEZ
The death has generated expressions of grief among residents of Cabo San Lucas.
Local reports identified Gabriela as a recent graduate of Colegio de Bachilleres Plantel 10.
Los Cabos Mayor Christian Agúndez Gómez publicly expressed condolences and pledged support for her family.
The case has also raised concerns about safety oversight at temporary amusement parks and the importance of ensuring that rides are properly inspected and operated.
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?
The PGJE is expected to continue examining the attraction, collecting witness statements and reviewing technical evidence.
Investigators will determine whether the fall resulted from a mechanical problem, a failure involving safety restraints, operational conditions or another cause.
Until those findings are released, attributing the accident to a specific failure or individual would be premature.
The attraction remains subject to the authorities’ investigation as Gabriela’s family and the local community await answers about the circumstances of her death.
