PYONGYANG, NORTH KOREA — October 20, 2026. New photographs of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un have emerged after unverified social media claims alleged that he had died from a brain hemorrhage. Images distributed by North Korea’s state media show the 42-year-old leader touring a clothing and footwear exhibition in Pyongyang, accompanied by his daughter, Kim Ju Ae. The reported visit took place on October 19, and the images were published the following day.
The photographs appeared as rumors spread online alleging that Kim had fallen into a coma, been transferred to a hospital in Beijing and subsequently died. The claims circulated without supporting evidence. South Korean diplomatic and security officials told Yonhap News Agency they had received no information supporting the reports, leaving the death allegations unsubstantiated.
WHAT THE NEW PHOTOGRAPHS SHOW
According to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) and the state newspaper Rodong Sinmun, Kim visited the 2026 National Exhibition of Garments and Footwear on Monday. The event focused on developing new products and improving quality. Images published by North Korean outlets show Kim examining children’s shoes, women’s coats and other merchandise while speaking with officials.
His daughter, Kim Ju Ae, appears alongside him in the released photographs, while other images also show his wife, Ri Sol Ju. The appearance was the first time in eight days that North Korean state media had published photographs of Kim at a public event. His previous reported public appearance was connected to the opening of the National Defense Revolution Museum on October 11.
HOW THE DEATH RUMORS STARTED
The claims reportedly originated in social media posts by Wanjun Xie, a Chinese dissident based in the United States who identifies himself as chairman of the China Democracy Party, an organization banned by Chinese authorities. Xie alleged that Kim had suffered a severe brain hemorrhage, lost consciousness and been taken to Peking Union Medical College Hospital in Beijing before dying. He provided no verifiable evidence to substantiate the allegations.
Further speculation spread about a possible transfer of power to Kim’s sister, Kim Yo Jong, and alleged Chinese military involvement in a succession process involving Kim Ju Ae. Neither claim was supported by credible evidence. The episode illustrates how limited access to information about North Korea’s leadership can allow unverified claims to circulate rapidly before reliable information becomes available.
WHY THE PHOTOGRAPHS DO NOT SETTLE EVERY QUESTION
Although the images provide a reported recent public appearance, they do not independently establish Kim’s medical condition. North Korea restricts independent access to many official events, and foreign journalists were not present to verify the exhibition firsthand. The photographs were distributed through state-controlled media, meaning their timing and context rely on the information provided by North Korean authorities.
Rumors about Kim’s health have circulated before. In 2020, an extended absence from public view prompted international speculation about his condition, but he later reappeared in state media. Such episodes underscore the difficulty of independently assessing developments involving North Korea’s leadership. In this case, no credible evidence has emerged to substantiate the latest reports of his death.
POSSIBLE TRUMP-KIM DIPLOMACY REMAINS A SEPARATE QUESTION
The rumors also circulated amid renewed discussion of whether U.S. President Donald Trump might meet Kim later in 2026. Trump has expressed interest in the possibility of renewed engagement, but a meeting has not been confirmed. Prediction-market estimates concerning a potential encounter have fluctuated, and they should not be interpreted as evidence that diplomatic arrangements are underway.
For now, the established facts are limited: North Korean state media reported Kim’s October 19 exhibition visit, South Korean officials said they had no information supporting the death claims, and the allegations circulating online remain unverified. Further independently corroborated information would be needed to establish any change in Kim’s health or political status.
