TENNESSEE PRISON ESCAPEE JACOB MORLEY REMAINS AT LARGE AFTER STOLEN TRUCK FOUND IN ILLINOIS

TIPTONVILLE, TENNESSEE — October 27, 2026. A convicted murderer serving a life sentence has triggered a multistate manhunt after escaping a Tennessee prison and allegedly stealing a pickup truck that was later discovered abandoned more than 100 miles away in Illinois. Authorities have warned that 28-year-old Jacob Allen Morley should be considered dangerous, while someone close to his murder victim fears that his escape could put additional lives at risk.

The search entered a critical new phase Tuesday when the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation confirmed that the stolen vehicle had been located in Marion, Illinois. Morley was not with the truck, and investigators had not publicly established where he went afterward. State and federal law enforcement agencies are assisting in efforts to locate him.

HOW JACOB MORLEY ESCAPED A TENNESSEE PRISON

Morley escaped from the Northwest Correctional Complex in Tiptonville on Sunday, October 25. Prison employees discovered that he was missing at approximately 11:30 p.m., prompting an emergency count and an immediate search of the facility.

A subsequent review of security camera footage showed Morley breaching the prison’s perimeter fence while wearing his Tennessee Department of Correction uniform. Officials have not publicly explained how he managed to get through the security barrier or how long he had been outside the facility before staff discovered his absence.

STOLEN PICKUP TRUCK DISCOVERED ABANDONED IN ILLINOIS

Investigators obtained surveillance footage showing Morley allegedly stealing a white 2008 Ford F-350 pickup truck at approximately 1 a.m. Monday, October 26. The vehicle was taken from the 400 block of Keystone Drive in Lake County, about two miles south of the prison.

The truck, which carried markings identifying it as belonging to Lindamood Planting Company, was subsequently captured on surveillance cameras traveling through communities in northwestern Tennessee. Authorities recovered the vehicle early Tuesday in Marion, Illinois, but announced that Morley’s location remained unknown.

The discovery significantly expanded the geographical scope of the investigation. Officials have not confirmed whether Morley continued traveling in another vehicle, received assistance or remained in the area where the pickup was abandoned.

MURDER VICTIM’S FRIEND FEARS MORE PEOPLE COULD BE HARMED

Diana Reid, a childhood friend of Cody Birchfield, the man Morley was convicted of killing, expressed serious concerns about public safety during an interview with Fox News Digital.

Reid said she fears Morley could harm another person while attempting to avoid capture. She also described Birchfield as a caring individual whose death left a lasting impact on his friends and family.

Her comments reflect the emotional consequences of the escape for people connected to the original murder case. Authorities have not announced evidence that Morley has committed another violent offense since escaping, although his criminal history has prompted law enforcement to warn the public against approaching him.

THE 2022 MURDER OF CODY BIRCHFIELD

Morley was serving a life sentence following his conviction for the murder of Cody Birchfield, a Tennessee man who disappeared in February 2022 after last being seen in Elizabethton.

Investigators initially found evidence suggesting that a violent crime had occurred inside Birchfield’s residence. On March 2, 2022, Morley was arrested following a vehicle pursuit that extended toward the North Carolina state line.

Investigators subsequently discovered Birchfield’s remains beneath Morley’s home. Morley was later convicted of first-degree murder and additional offenses, including aggravated burglary, evidence tampering, evading arrest and vandalism.

AUTHORITIES EXPAND MANHUNT ACROSS STATE LINES

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation placed Morley on its Most Wanted list and offered a reward of up to $2,500 for information leading to his arrest.

Law enforcement agencies in multiple states are assisting the search. The Missouri State Highway Patrol has encouraged residents to remain alert and examine available surveillance recordings for possible sightings.

The Tennessee Department of Correction has also coordinated with local police, state troopers and federal authorities. Aviation resources have been deployed, while officers have searched buildings and structures near the prison.

WHAT THE PUBLIC SHOULD KNOW ABOUT THE ESCAPED INMATE

Morley is described as approximately 5 feet 11 inches tall, weighing 240 pounds, with brown hair and green eyes.

Authorities have urged residents not to approach, confront or attempt to apprehend him. Anyone who believes they have encountered Morley should immediately contact 911.

People with information that could assist investigators may also contact the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation at 1-800-TBI-FIND (1-800-824-3463).

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT IN THE SEARCH?

The recovery of the stolen pickup represents an important development, but the manhunt remains active. Investigators are expected to continue reviewing surveillance footage, potential travel routes and information from the public as they attempt to determine Morley’s movements.

The prison escape itself is also likely to raise questions about how a life-sentenced inmate breached the facility’s security perimeter without being immediately intercepted.

As of the latest confirmed October 27 reports, authorities had not announced Morley’s capture. The next critical update will be whether investigators identify his location and safely return him to custody.
